Dryer Runs But Won't Heat: Vents, Elements and Gas Valves Explained

Many East County laundry rooms sit in the middle of the house with vent runs of 15 to 25 feet and several elbows. Lint accumulates, airflow drops, and the thermal fuse blows to protect the machine. Replacing the fuse without clearing the vent guarantees a repeat failure.

If clothes are damp and the drum smells hot, restricted airflow is the likely cause — and during red-flag conditions it is a genuine fire risk worth taking seriously.

Electric dryers lose heat when the heating element burns out, the thermal fuse opens, or one leg of the 240V supply is lost — a common cause when the drum still turns.

Gas dryers usually fail at the igniter, the flame sensor or the gas valve coils. These are inexpensive parts but require correct diagnosis and safe handling of the gas line.

Clean the lint screen every load and have the full vent run professionally cleared once a year. It shortens dry times, lowers energy bills and prevents most no-heat calls.
