How East County Hard Water Wrecks Dishwashers, Washers and Ice Makers

Anything that heats or restricts water is the first casualty: dishwasher heating elements and spray arms, washer inlet valve screens, and the narrow fill tube feeding a refrigerator ice maker. Scale insulates heating elements so they run hotter and fail early.

The symptoms look like part failures. Chalky glassware, a dishwasher that will not dry, a washer that fills slowly and times out, an ice maker producing hollow or undersized cubes — all commonly scale, not a dead component.

We descale before we condemn. Pulling and cleaning a spray arm, flushing an inlet valve screen or clearing a fill tube costs a fraction of a parts swap and often restores full performance in one visit.

When a part genuinely has failed, we replace it and clear the cause at the same time. Fitting a new valve behind a sediment-heavy supply just books the next callout.

Run a citric-acid or dishwasher-safe descaler cycle every couple of months, keep a fresh refrigerator water filter in place, and clean washer inlet screens twice a year. Whole-house softening or a point-of-use filter on the fridge line usually pays for itself in extended appliance life.
